Muay Thai vs MMA: What's the Difference?
Ultimate Beatdown · 29 April 2026
If you're new to combat sports in Johor Bahru, two terms come up again and again: Muay Thai and MMA. From the outside they look alike — two athletes, gloves, a crowd — but they are different sports with different rules, skill sets, and ways to win. Here's a clear breakdown.
What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai is a striking art from Thailand, often called "the art of eight limbs" because fighters strike with fists, elbows, knees, and shins. The action stays standing. Fighters punch, kick, knee, and elbow, and they can clinch — grabbing the opponent to control posture and land short knees. If the fight hits the ground, the referee resets it to standing.
What is MMA?
MMA (mixed martial arts) combines striking and grappling. Fighters can punch and kick like in Muay Thai, but they can also take the fight to the ground, wrestle, and finish with submissions like chokes and joint locks. MMA blends boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and judo into one ruleset.
What are the main differences?
- Where the fight happens: Muay Thai is stand-up only. MMA can be fought standing, against the cage, or on the ground.
- Allowed techniques: Muay Thai allows elbows and clinch knees but no takedowns to finish. MMA allows takedowns, ground striking, and submissions, with elbow and knee rules that vary by ruleset.
- How fights end: Muay Thai usually ends by knockout or decision. MMA can also end by submission — a tap out.
- Gloves: Muay Thai uses larger boxing-style gloves. MMA uses small open-finger gloves so fighters can grip and grapple.
Which should a beginner start with?
Either is a great start, and they complement each other. Muay Thai builds your stand-up striking, footwork, and conditioning. Grappling arts like wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teach control and ground defence. Most well-rounded MMA fighters train both — if your goal is to step into the cage one day, you'll eventually need striking and grappling.
