The Plaza Sentosa Golden Era: Six Years of Rooftop Fight Nights
Ultimate Beatdown · 11 Februari 2026
Every promotion has an era it is remembered by. For Ultimate Beatdown, it is the rooftop. From late 2014 through to the start of 2020, UB made its home on the 8th-floor open-air rooftop of Plaza Sentosa in Johor Bahru, and across those six years it ran more than twenty events there. Fights under the night sky, the city lights behind the cage, the crowd close enough to feel every shot — this was the period that turned UB from a promising regional show into Malaysia's most consistent MMA platform. Fighters who built names here. Fans who came back month after month. It is, by common agreement, the golden era.
What made the Plaza Sentosa era special?
It started with UB 15 on 15 November 2014 — the first event at the rooftop venue, and a big one, carrying around 20 fights on a single card. That set the tone. The Plaza Sentosa years (covering roughly UB 15 through UB 36) were defined by volume and consistency: regular shows, deep cards spanning MMA, kickboxing, Siam Rules combat, boxing and no-gi grappling, and a rooftop atmosphere that no indoor hall could replicate.
The open-air setting became part of UB's identity. There is something about an outdoor cage, under the stars, in the middle of a working Malaysian city, that no air-conditioned arena gives you. For six years that rooftop was where Johor's fight scene gathered.
When did UB first go on the road?
The golden era was also when UB stopped being a purely Johor promotion. UB 28 "Borneo", held on 12 May 2018 in Sabah, was the promotion's first away event — taking the cage across the South China Sea to East Malaysia. It was staged at the IRCC Exhibition Centre in Penampang, with a full card of bouts.
UB went back to Borneo the following year. UB 34 "The Way of KDM" landed in Labuan on 20 July 2019, putting the promotion on the island federal territory and broadening its footprint to a third state. Across its history UB has now run events in Johor, Sabah and Labuan — five venues across three states — and that geographic reach was forged during the rooftop years. There was also UB 25 "Medini Showdown" on 4 November 2017, a two-day event staged near Legoland, showing the promotion was confident enough to run multi-day formats.
How did the golden era end?
It ended the way a lot of things ended in 2020 — suddenly. UB 36 "New Era" took place on 14 March 2020 at Plaza Sentosa. Days later, Malaysia announced the Movement Control Order, and the country shut down. UB 36 became the last event before the COVID gap, an unintentionally fitting name for a card that turned out to close one chapter completely.
Nobody at the rooftop that night knew it would be the final show there for a long time. The golden era did not fade out; it stopped mid-stride. But six years and twenty-plus rooftop events had built something durable enough to survive the silence that followed — and UB would come back.
