The Colosseum Comeback: How Ultimate Beatdown Survived COVID

When UB 36 closed out the rooftop golden era in March 2020, nobody planned for it to be the last show for almost two years. But the Movement Control Order shut Malaysia down within days, and live combat sports — crowds, contact, travel, the whole business — became impossible overnight. For a promotion built entirely on putting people in a room to watch other people fight, the pandemic was an existential problem. Ultimate Beatdown went dark for roughly 20 months. The question was not when it would come back, but whether it could.

How did UB come back after COVID?

It came back on 13 November 2021 with UB 37 "Ascendance" — and it came back at a new home. The rooftop era was over; the modern era would be staged at The Colosseum MMA at City Plaza in Johor Bahru. UB 37 carried a full card of MMA bouts plus grappling, the kind of depth that proved the local talent pool had survived the lay-off intact.

The name "Ascendance" was a mission statement. After 20 months of silence, UB did not return quietly with a small card to test the waters — it returned with a statement that the promotion was climbing again. Restarting a live event business after a shutdown that long is genuinely hard: fighters are out of camp, sponsors have moved on, audiences have new habits. UB 37 cleared all of it.

What defines the Colosseum era?

What followed has been the busiest stretch in UB's history. From UB 37 onward — through the 50s and beyond — the modern era has delivered a steady drumbeat of events that have carried the promotion past its 60th show. A few markers of the modern run:

• UB 44 "Dawn of the Conqueror" — 11 February 2023.
• UB 47 "Kulai Madani" — 19 August 2023, taking the promotion to Kulai.
• UB 54 "Merdeka Fight" — 31 August 2024, staged at Aeon Mall Kulaijaya to mark Malaysia's independence day.
• UB 56 "The Reckoning" — 22 February 2025, back at City Plaza.

The modern era kept the full multi-discipline format UB has always run — MMA, kickboxing, Siam Rules combat, boxing and no-gi grappling — while reaching new audiences with venue-specific cards like the Merdeka show. It is the proof that UB is not a survivor coasting on nostalgia; it is an active, growing promotion.

Why does the comeback matter?

Plenty of regional promotions did not reopen after COVID. UB did — and then built its most prolific era on the other side of the shutdown. Across 16 years it has now run 60-plus events and 500-plus bouts, in five venues across three states, drawing fighters from eight or more countries. The Colosseum comeback is the chapter that earned UB its title as Malaysia's longest-running MMA promotion, because longevity only counts if you make it through the hard part. UB made it through the hardest part of all.
